The Mind Behind the Work

Peter J. Mars is a High-Risk Security Contractor, author and visual artist.

His work is shaped by more than 32 years of operational experience in conflict regions, high-risk environments and international diplomatic security operations. Through both books and paintings, he transforms operational reality, observation, strategy and human behaviour into written and visual work with a raw, authentic atmosphere. He is still operational and collecting new experiences. 

His books focus on situational awareness, mental analysis, security tips for children from 8 to 15 years old and first-hand operational experience. His paintings are original acrylic works inspired by conflict environments, operational deployments and the psychological pressure of extreme conditions.

Each painting is created on canvas using acrylic paint applied with original operational objects that are directly connected to the subject portrayed. Instead of traditional brushes, Peter uses items such as his combat knife, sections of a parachute, spent cartridge cases, live cartridges, melted Kalashnikov ammunition, an axe, a compass, pressure bandages and other authentic operational equipment. Every object leaves its own physical trace on the canvas, giving the artwork not only its texture and story, but also a soul. By embedding the actual objects from his operational life into the painting process, Peter leaves a part of their history, and of himself, within the canvas.
